Discovery Notes | This is the same soil sample used to isolate Arthrobacteriophage Piccoletto. The sample was collected on a cloudy day at around 1:00 PM. The elevation of the place where the sample was collected is 2,518 m above sea level. The sample was collected at the root of a mature pine. |
Naming Notes | Nahla is the name of one of the characters in Disney's "The Lion King." The students considered that it was worth giving the phage that name because it represents courage and persistence but with a female personality. It took substantial persistence to isolate this phage - a total of 51 different samples were collectively analyzed by our Phage Hunters fall 2015 class, 9 collected in Cloudcroft, NM, and 42 collected in El Paso, TX. Out of all those only this one sample turned out phages. Interestingly, the name of the character in "The Lion King" is spelled "Nala", without the "h". |
