Discovery Notes | Samy is a temperate phage present in the genome of Streptomyces ambofaciens ATCC 23877. Samy particles were isolated from cultures of this strain grown for 4 days at 30°C in BM medium (1 g/l yeast extract, 1 g/l meat/beef extract, 2 g/l bactotryptone, pH 7.3). Samy is produced produced simultaneously with the activation of other mobile genetic elements and phage-related genes such as those encoding phage tail-like nanostructures. |
Naming Notes | The name was chosen because of the name of the host strain Streptomyces ambofaciens (SAM) ATCC 23877, which already contains other mobile genetic elements, plasmids called pSAM1 and pSAM2. The phage produced was therefore named Samy. |

Sequencing Notes | There is one base in the PhagesDB genome of this sequence that differs from the sequence currently in GenBank. At position 55286, we have a G where the GenBank file has a T. This is because the sequencing reads showed a polymorphism at that position, and we called a G (~59% of reads) whereas the previous assembly called a T (~41% of reads). Neither is "right" or "wrong", as the population that was sequenced was truly mixed at this position. |
