Discovery Notes | The soil sample was collected from a landscaping bush outside of the Glaske Center for Engineering, Science, and Technology building at LeTourneau University at 10:18 a.m. CST on August 23, 2022. The weather was very cloudy and humid with a 90% chance of rain and an ambient temperature of 23.9°C. The soil was very damp and muddy at the surface since it had been raining for the past few days, with 2.2 inches in the last 24 hours. There was plant debris covering the surface. We dug approximately 2 inches below the plant debris. The soil was rich and dark with worms, grubs, and other organisms present, but we made sure that no worms or grubs were present in the soil sample that we took to the lab for further processing. |
Naming Notes | Our lab group isolated two phages, which is where the "di-" prefix originates from. Notably, the two phages showed drastically different plague sizes. Our other phage, Dimaximus, created significantly larger plaques compared to this phage. In Latin, “maximus” refers to the "greatest" or "largest," whereas “minimus” refers to the "smallest, smaller, or least." Since this phage creates very small plaques, we decided to name it “Diminimus.” |
