Discovery NotesThis phage was isolated by rinsing the mouth with sterile saline, filtering through a 0.22 um filter, and plating 0.5 mL of filtrate with 0.5 mL stationary bacteria culture onto a Trypsic Soy Agar (TSA) plate with 0.5% Tryptic Soy Top Agar (TSTA) supplemented with 1 mM CaCl2. Plaques formed after 24-48 hours at 37C.
Naming NotesThis phage was isolated in an Advanced Microbiology class with several pre-dental majors. In the spirit of dentistry, we pooled everyone's saliva after rinsing with sterile saline in an attempt to find a phage in the oral cavity. To our delight we discovered one phage and also identified the host. We are naming the phage Spartoi, after the mythical people that sprang up from dragon's teeth and are though to be the ancestors of Theban nobility.
