Discovery Notes | Soil sample was retrieved from a Garden box outside of Wesley W. Posvar Hall. Temperature at time of collection was 61 degrees Fahrenheit. Weather conditions in the previous 24 hours were in the mid 40s and clear. Soil sample was collected on January 31st, 2016. Plaques were found using a direct plating procedure. |
Naming Notes | The name "Kabluna" is an Ihalmiut word for 'invader,' or 'blight.' The Ihalmiut, literally "People from beyond," were a tribe of Inuit Indians who lived in Canada's Kivalliq region, present day Nunavut. The Ihalmiut used the word "Kabluna" to describe the diseases (and those who brought disease to them) which ultimately ended their way of life. As such, I thought the name 'Kabluna' apt for a bacteriophage, seeing as they are, from the perspective of the bacterial hosts, also 'invaders,' and 'blights.' |
