| Discovery Notes | Soil was collected from a flower garden of marigolds outside of Thackeray Hall at the University of Pittsburgh. The marigolds that were near the soil collection site were wilting and decaying. The sample was collected 2 to 3 inches from the surface and the garden had been watered approximately an hour before collection. It was 87*F. |
| Naming Notes | The name Attis comes from Greek mythology. Attis was the god of rebirth and resurrection. The terms "rebirth" and "resurrection" seemed to describe bacteriophage activity: infecting and inducing lysis in a host cell in order to produce new phage particles. |
