Detailed Information for Phage Bromden
Discovery Information
Isolation HostMycobacterium smegmatis mc²155
Found ByHannah E Cizauskas
Year Found2017
Location FoundWestland, MI USA
Finding InstitutionHope College
ProgramScience Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science
From enriched soil sample?No
Isolation TemperatureNot entered
GPS Coordinates42.2896 N, 83.4289 W Map
Discovery NotesSlightly moist soil from a pumpkin patch that was composted with grass clippings.
Naming NotesThis phage is named after the main character in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, written by Ken Kesey. Chief Bromden is the only character that escaped the insane asylum by checking himself out. The other characters either remained in the asylum or died in there. He was the one that got out, much like my phage.
Sequencing Information
Sequencing Complete?Yes
Date Sequencing CompletedJan 8, 2018
Sequencing FacilityPittsburgh Bacteriophage Institute
Shotgun Sequencing MethodIllumina
Approximate Shotgun Coverage1973
Genome length (bp)70183
Character of genome ends3' Sticky Overhang
Overhang Length10 bases
Overhang SequenceTCGATCAGCC
GC Content58.2%
Sequencing NotesDespite a high level of coverage, the overhang was not present in the sequencing reads, and so it was inferred from highly similar genomes. Sanger sequencing will be attempted to cover this region.
