Discovery Notes | When the sample yielding this phage was collected (9:52 AM on 9-12-18), the temperature was approximately 65 degrees Fahrenheit and the weather was cloudy. The soil was dark, indicating nutrient-richness, and the area surrounding the collection location was a commonly walked pathway with plenty of detritus but little vegetation. |
Naming Notes | Sekhmet, in ancient Egyptian religion, was a warrior goddess whose name was often associated with rivalry and change. The rationale behind naming this particular phage Sekhmet is derived from the theory of a constant evolutionary battle between phages and their host bacteria. Just as bacteria have attained uncountable adaptations over their billions of years of coexistence with bacteriophages to prevent and deal with infection, phages have also adapted to more efficiently infect and propagate using their hosts. In this way, the population of bacteriophages is a symbol in biology much like Sekhmet was to the Egyptian people; wagers of war who trigger massive change in the world. |
