Detailed Information for Phage Ruin |
Discovery Information |
Isolation Host | Mycobacterium smegmatis mc²155 |
Found By | Xavier Brickeen |
Year Found | 2015 |
Location Found | Bowling Green, KY USA |
Finding Institution | Western Kentucky University |
Program | Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science |
From enriched soil sample? | Unknown |
Isolation Temperature | 37°C |
GPS Coordinates | 36.985639 N, 86.455444 W Map |
Discovery Notes | The soil was gathered from dry soil underneath a tree was approximately 4 centimeters deep. The tree was located 1 meter away from a concrete sidewalk and 4 meters away from a building. |
Naming Notes | I came up with the name Ruin because when a phage is in the lytic cycle and breaks out of the host cell, it "ruins" the cell. |

Plaque Notes | When incubated at 37 degrees Celsius, plaques are slightly turbid and approximately 2.5 millimeters in diameter. The plaques can be seen after 24 hours incubation and do not change after 48 hours. When incubated at 30 degrees Celsius the plaque morphology does not change other then becoming slightly more turbid. |
