Discovery Notes | We dug into the soil on the bank of the boathouse docks on Paradise Pond (at about a meter away from the water) and collected at about 2 centimeters deep. We filled the conical tube to about halfway. The soil was darkly colored, very moist, and the water content was high, with an almost muddy texture, but still coarse and clumped, to the soil. The temperature of the air at the time was approximately 20 degrees Celsius. There was very little foot traffic at the docks, because at the time, Paradise Pond was mostly drained, and the docks were not yet being used for much. However, the pond and where we took our soil samples is at the bottom of a short hill where there is a road for cars to travel at the top. The soil was growing thick but dispersed grass about half a meter up of from where we took the sample, and a meter below it, there were little organisms (about 5 mm long) swimming around in the very shallow (about 3 cm deep) water. |
