Discovery Notes | I collected my soil sample on the morning of August 24th, 2010. It was a cool morning, and it was lightly raining, therefore my soil sample was cool and moist. The air temperature was about 70 degrees.
The soil was under a thin layer of mulch, and I collected my sample from about an inch under the soil surface. |

Plaque Notes | At high concentrations, my phage seems to exhibit characteristics of a temperate life cycle. The plaques are small (1-2 mm in diameter) and turbid.
At lower concentrations, however, my phage seems to have a lytic life cycle. The plaques are larger (3 mm in diameter) and are clear and round. They also have a bulls-eye ring around them.
I think that the variation in plaque morphology may be due an ability of the phage to communicate with others of its kind through chemical signaling. Maybe its life cycle and replication rate are controlled by a protein that it secretes depending on the concentration of itself in its environment. |
