Discovery Notes | The bacteriophage was obtained from a soil sample in the courtyard of the residence hall where I live on Spalding University's campus. The soil was taken approximately 6 centimeters below the top of the grass. It was 39 degrees Fahrenheit outside, and the ground was lightly topped with snow. My soil sample was then centrifuged in the laboratory. The suspended phage particles were filtered and plated on an agar plate with the bacterial medium host Mycobacterium smegmatis. |
Naming Notes | Phages are alien-like entities that invade the human body. I named my bacteriophage Spock because it is the name of my favorite alien on the TV show Star Trek. |
